Red brick school scorecard

August 23, 2019

To the Editor:

Funktion Design — $75,000-plus for producing plans so grandiose and expensive that they could not gain voter approval.

St. Germain Town Boards — proved that for 20 years you can neglect your statutory responsibility to maintain public buildings in your care and, in effect, practice “demolition by neglect” — or, is it “out of sight, out of mind?”

C & D Excavating — $64,000-plus to demolish and remove the still structurally sound red brick school.

The taxpayers of St. Germain — for almost $140,000 to the above named businesses with nothing to show for it.

Future generations — who will no longer have an important part of their town’s history as visible evidence of an earlier way of life and learning.

The red brick school itself — which stood as a landmark in this community for nearly 80 years and housed generations of children in their education — sometimes we don’t appreciate what we have until it is gone.

Robert W. Frenz

St. Germain
