Thank God I was found

May 12, 2020

To the Editor:

I want to tell you about a miracle that I have experienced. Feb. 27, I slid off the Blue Lake Road where I remained for four and one half hours. In spite of my antics, none of the numerous passing motorists noticed me or my car. The 30-foot bank that separated me from the road was formidable to climb. Because I became so very cold, I crawled back into my car believing I would never be found. Now is when the miracle occurred.

About this time Tom and Natalie Lawrence and Ken Tyler decided to drive Blue Lake Road and “look around.” They later said, “By the Grace of God we saw her car as it didn’t look as if a car had gone off the road.”  Through the twilight I saw human shapes and heard their voices. Thank God I had been found. They called rescuers. My daughter, Lori Schmidt, came upon my accident and also made a call to the Minocqua Police.

I do not remember my ride to or my arrival at the Howard Young Emergency Center. I was more dead than alive suffering from the effects of hypothermia. After wonderful care at the Center, I was released.

My family and I want to thank Natalie, Tom, Ken and the men and women of the emergency response teams for saving my life. I know in my heart that I have experienced a miracle.
