John V. Trunk

 Lac du Flambeau — John V. Trunk, 77, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, at Tomahawk Health Center, in Tomahawk after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Sharon (Shumate) Trunk; his son, Jeff Trunk (Mary); his daughters, Michele Wallace (Miller); Nancy Holz (William); four grandchildren, Morgan Tennessen (Travis); Chelsea Holz; Jordan Trunk; Karissa Trunk; and great-grandson William Tennessen. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Trunk (Marilyn); niece, Anna Klebba (Michael), their daughter Breanna; nephews Tom Trunk (fiancé Laura Denny), son Coen, stepdaughter Taylor; Jereme Trunk (Sarah), their daughter Adalyn; and many close friends.

Mr. Trunk was born and raised in Chicago, the son of Valentine and Georgia (Howerton) Trunk.

At the young age of 10, Mr. Trunk worked for the local seller of fruits and vegetables from a truck in the neighborhood. John continued working throughout his young life providing for the family. After graduating from Lane Tech in Chicago, John served with the Army, First Cavalry Division, in Korea, Vietnam and Germany, rising to Sergeant 1st Class. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, graduating in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and finance.

Mr. Trunk met his wife, Sharon Shumate, in Camp Lake, and they married in 1965 at Gloria Dei Church in Chicago. John worked as a mortgage loan officer, as well as a commercial real estate agent. His dream was to live in northern Wisconsin and build his own home, which he realized in 2008.

John liked working with people and served as chairman of the local Lac du Flambeau Native American tribe’s WOLF lending agency. He also worked part-time at Trigs food store, Ace Hardware, and Walmart, where he enjoyed meeting and helping people.

John will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

A private gathering will be held for family and friends at their Squaw Lake home on Saturday, Jan. 25.
