Thomas E. Martens
Thomas (Tom) E. Martens, 71, of St. Germain, died peacefully on Thursday, May 14, 2020 after complications due to a recent surgery. Tom was born on Aug. 11, 1948 in Milwaukee, to Harry and Carroll (Koeckritz) Martens. He married Karen Miller on Dec. 13, 1969 in Fort Wayne, Ind., they recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.
Tom is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen; their children: Tommy (Jennifer) Martens of Minnesota; Stephanie (Glen) Householder of Oregon; five grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Trevor, and Isabelle of Minnesota and Meghan (Mike), Erik (Danielle) of Oregon; one great-granddaughter, River Rose, of Oregon. He also leaves behind his brothers Carl (Sylvia) Martens, Richard (Mary) Martens, and sister Julie Martens Schroeder.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Carroll Martens; his half-brother David and half-sister Noel.
Tom was four when his parents and two brothers moved to St. Germain from Wauwatosa in 1953. Tom attended the St. Germain Graded School (Red Brick School) and Eagle River High School in Eagle River, graduating valedictorian of his class in 1966. While in high school, he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. Tom played the trombone in the band and especially loved the marching band. Tom went on to attend Michigan Tech in Houghton, Mich., and majored in education. He began his teaching career in mathematics at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, as a student teacher in the spring of 1971. Tom retired from Lakeland in 2004 after 34 years of teaching. While teaching at Lakeland, he coached the girls’ softball program and the freshman boys’ basketball (until his son started playing basketball in the middle school in Eagle River). Upon the resignation of Laurie Boedecker in 1971, the town board asked his mother, Carroll Martens, if she would like to take over the position of town clerk. She declined, but said that her son Tom may want to fill the role because of his love for math. He accepted, and Tom became town clerk of St. Germain, serving in that capacity until his untimely death. Tom greatly looked forward to celebrating 50 years as town clerk in the coming year. On Sept. 28, 2012 Tom was inducted in to the Eagle River/Northland Pines High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Additionally, his 1965-1966 high school basketball team was inducted in to the Hall of Fame on Aug. 19, 2016.
A gathering to honor Tom’s life with friends and family will be announced at a later date. The family requests no flowers. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Germain United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 178, St. Germain, WI 54558.
