Thomas M. Shoulders

With heavy hearts we said goodbye to Tommy on April 13, 2020 at the age of 73 in Titusville, Fla. Tommy and his wife, Peggy, enjoyed spending winters in Florida where he reconnected with fraternity, Navy Seal, Master Diver brothers and friends from all over.

Born in Wausau, he graduated from Wausau High School, and attended George Williams College in Chicago. Tommy joined the Navy in 1966. He served as a decorated UDT (Underwater Demolition Team), a Navy Seal receiving a Bronze Star during the Vietnam War, and a Master Diver. Master Chief Tom Shoulders was a lifer, serving his country for 28 years until a skydiving accident ended his active duty in 1990, being retired in 1994. One of the Seals sayings go, “All in, all the time” describes Tommy’s retired life where he continued serving in the Northwoods of Hazelhurst. Tommy truly enjoyed his long-term friendships, his new friendships and his involvement in the Masonic Lodge. His Masonic Brothers are quoted saying when he passed that “Tommy was called to continue his service in the Lodge Eternal in the Hall of the Great Architect.” Tommy was also involved with the Shriners and the American Legion.

Tommy is survived by his wife Peggy, his son Eric (Lori), grandchildren, Ashley, Liv, Summer, Brendan, step-son Chip (Amanda) and step-grandchildren Dharma and Bryson. His sisters Sandy (Bob) Wagner, and Sheila (John) Miech. Nephews, Dave (Nicole) Wagner, Jason (fiancée JoAnna) Wagner, Jesse Miech, and Ryan Miech. His mother-in law, Joy Synder, father-in-law CMDR Sam Synder, brother-in-law, Scott Synder, and sister-in-law Rebekah Synder.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Dolores Shoulders, and an infant son Michael Shoulders.

A celebration of his life will be “outside” (please bring a lawn chair) at his home, 6205 Sandy Beach Lane, Hazelhurst, on Sunday, July 26, 2020, from 1 to 3 p.m. The Island City Masonic Lodge will preside followed by the VFW honor guard. A reception will follow the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to the various community establishments that Tommy and Peggy have supported over the years.

Mailing address is Peggy Shoulders, P.O. Box 43, Hazelhurst, WI 54531.

Peggy would like to thank Peter and Zinda (Dills) Michelson, Scott Synder, Gail and Dale Hoesly, Jon and Carla Mundy, Mary Jane and Todd Keller, Mary and Brian Connor, and Sandy, Sheila, Bob, and John for being there for her during this difficult time.
